How to Add a Favicon to the Website?

It is mainly used to bookmark a web page. It is referred as the little icon displayed on the browser next to the page’s title on a browser tab. It is very important and critical for site recognition in a browser full of tabs. It helps building the site’s branding and the website looks incomplete without it. It is easy to add a favicon to website, but many designers and developers find it difficult to add it. The images should be 16×16 pixels in size and the user can either resize the existing photo, or create a tiny image for use as a Favicon.
Favicon uses the icon (.ico) file format and it is hassle free to transfer it to different forms. User need not limit themselves to creation of a square icon as .ico format supports transparency. Also, it is advisable to use the .gif or .png format during the creation of image.

Here are the Steps to Add a Favicon to the Website –

  • First login to the cPanel using the correct login credentials.
  • Now move to ‘File Manager’ and select the directory for the site.
  • Next upload the favicon to the server and then edit the source code. It will contain the <head> code for the site and it looks similar to the snapshot to the right.
  • After that add the following line of code below the <title> tag as follows:
    “<link rel=’shortcut icon’ href=’favicon.ico’ type=’image/x-icon’ />”
